postheadericon Great Gift Ideas For Winter Sports Enthusiasts

Article by L Quinn

It’s no surprise that winter sports are popular around Christmas time, with many areas of the country just minutes or hours from great skiing during this time of year. But what do you get the person in your life that’s crazy about skiing or snowboarding? Here are some excellent gift ideas that are sure to please the winter sports enthusiasts in your life:

It’s not easy to buy someone a new pair of skis, boots or even clothing since it’s difficult to know what size they wear. Instead of the types of gifts that require proper sizing, consider gifts that will surely be used and won’t be brought back to the store because they don’t fit. One excellent gift idea is a lift pass to their favorite ski area. All you need to do is find out where they ski. You’ll find most ski destinations offer ski or lift passes to purchase easily online. Ski goggles are also a gift that will surely be appreciated and used by the recipient. Ski goggles are an easy gift to size as well, since goggles are usually a “one size fits all” type of item. There’s a wide range of ski goggles, including sexy and sleek versions that will provide any skiier with a comfortable, clear and safe experience for their eyes while on the slopes. You may also consider a helmet, which is only available in small, medium and large sizes, so it’s quite easy to pick the right size, as long as you have an idea of the size of the recipients head. A helmet is a gift that you can feel great about, since it has the potential to keep your loved one safe and may even save their life.

Your loved one may enjoy listening to Beethoven while swooshing down the slopes, if so, then consider getting them one of the new wireless audio kits now available. These kits will work with their MP3 player and allow them to use wireless headphones that fit snugly inside of their helmet or cap. An iTunes gift certificate would go well with this gift, or even a new iPod.

More great and economical ideas for skiiers include gloves, ski caps and socks. Gloves are a good choice since they are generally available in set sizes like small, medium and large or men’s and women’s. Ski caps are a nice idea for skiiers who don’t wear helmets and they’re available in a huge range of styles, colors and fabrics. You’ll surely find one that fits the personality of the recipient. You don’t want to forget the socks. Yes, it may seem boring to some people, but thick, cozy winter socks are a practical gift for any skiier or snowboarder, that they’ll appreciate whether on the slopes or off.

Perfect Stocking Stuffers

Gift certificates to an outdoor or sporting goods store are a fantastic gift idea for anyone who is in need of some new gear. This way, they can get the perfect size. Gift cards also fit perfect in a card or stocking. Don’t forget accessories either. There are many small and low cost accessories that any skiier or snowboarder will be able to make use of. Consider ear warmers, earmuffs, scarves, headbands, ski wax, lanyards, GPS devices, weather radios, watches or sunglasses.

postheadericon A Great Approach To Winter Sports

Article by Simon Barnett

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

The fluffy, white powder falling from the skies makes winter a great time for family activities. All it takes is a little bit of planning, a lot of bundling, and the willingness to explore the great outdoors during the colder months.

Plan Ahead

Winter activities are just as beneficial to your family’s health as summer activities. However, you do need to plan ahead. Of course, every family member should have a warm, waterproof winter jacket. Make sure all family members (yes, including adults) have properly fitting snow pants. Gloves, hats, thick socks, and neck warmers are also essential. Avoid scarfs or stylish boots as they can create a safety hazard during activities.

Skiing and Snowboarding

The most classic winter activities are skiing and snowboarding. Skiing has been a mainstay in winter wonderland climates across the country for many years, but snowboarding is fast approaching in popularity. Snowboarding is often touted as best for beginners, while cross country skiing is a superb option for those looking for exercise but not a large amount of risk.

Sledding or Tobogganing

Sledding is the most accessible of winter sports. Simply visit your local supermarket or toy store to find a sled for between ten and thirty dollars. With normal wear and tear, this small investment will last for several years. Next step- Find a local golf course, public park, or school yard that has a large, tree-free hill and allows public sledding. This can be done through word of mouth, or by simply keeping watch for children sledding when you’re driving through town. It may seem that sledding is less exercise than skiing or snowboarding, but remember you must walk up the hill after each time down it!

Tobogganing is the lesser known but more advanced version of sledding. Some cold states have tobogganing courses, similar to ski courses. These long wooden sleds can reach speeds up to 45 miles per hour and can fit three to five people. Because these more advanced sleds require larger hills, most tobogganing courses feature chair lifts to return the riders to the top of the hill.

There truly is a winter activity for every member of the family. Whichever adventure you choose, make sure to bundle up and do your research in advance. A fun and healthy time in the crisp air and fluffy snow can be had by all!

postheadericon Looking for Great Water sports Action? The Columbia River Gorge Delivers

Article by Lloyd Kessler

What could the golden shores of Bondai Beach possibly have in common with the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon? The fact is that both are amazing destinations for the water sports enthusiast.

Ask some water sports enthusiasts where the best action is to be found and they may mention some faraway foreign beach. There are others though who know better; the Columbia River Gorge, an 80 mile waterway that cuts through Oregon and Washington in the Pacific Northwest, is one place that no aquatic adventurer should miss out on visiting. Nor should the motorist, the ride along the highway that follows the Columbia River Gorge is unforgettable, as thousands discover every year.

For many of the visitors to the Columbia River Gorge though, the real action is right down on the water, where daredevils can get their adrenaline fix from a trip thorough raging white waters, while the more sedate river lover can indulge themselves with a calming float in a simple row boat or sturdy canoe along one of the many quiet backwaters.

Canoeing and kayaking are very popular pursuits all along the Columbia River Gorge, with guided trips available that range from quietly bobbing along calm backwaters to the thrill of crashing down through some of the best whitewaters and rapids to be found in the country, meaning that there is something for everyone, whatever their courage level.

For those who prefer their water sports to really be on the wild side the kite boarding action along the Columbia River Gorge is said by many enthusiasts of the sport to be the best in the US. Kiteboarding – which is sort of like surfing on a skateboard – needs great winds, and the many who go there to indulge their passion for the sport say that the winds in the Columbia River Gorge are just right. Windsurfers must agree too, as each and every August the Columbia River Gorge is the site of the US Windsurfing National Championships.

No discussion of water sports can be complete though without considering fishing opportunities, and there are indeed plenty all along the Gorge and the ponds and lakes that flow off it. One of the biggest challenges for fishermen in these waters is landing an elusive sturgeon, as they lurk deep in dark waters, just as their ancestors have for centuries, and can be found as large as ten feet in length. However with walleye, wilderness trout and small mouth bass abundant too, there is a tremendous amount of variety.

If, on the other hand you prefer dry land, there is still plenty to do in the Columbia River Gorge. The sightseeing is incredible, for instance there are more than 75 waterfalls on the side of the Gorge that is located in Oregon alone. Add to that hundreds of great eateries and fascinating shops of all kinds and the possibilities for exploration abound.

postheadericon What’s so Great About Magazine Competitions?

Article by Matthew James

If you like reading magazines, and entering competitions, why not combine the two, with magazine competitions?

With a wide range of magazines to choose from, and even more competitions to enter, you’ll never be short of something to read and do. Whatever your hobbies and interests are there’s bound to be a magazine dedicated to the things you enjoy doing. You may even find that there are industry magazines relating to your job that can help you at work

You might already regularly buy magazines on a specific subject that interests you, such as sport, music, health, family or celebrities, and enter some of the competitions inside. Or alternatively you might look through several magazines and see which competitions catch your eye, and then buy these just for the magazine competitions.

There are even dedicated competition magazines and websites that offer nothing but competitions. These are great for those people who have the time to sit and enter all the competitions, and don’t mind looking at a magazine or website that has nothing to read and no real content. For the rest of us though, these magazines would be boring, and unless you did all the competitions wouldn’t necessarily be value for money. Although, if you won one or two website or magazine competitions, they would represent better value for money!

Magazine competitions are a great way of companies to promote their brand, or to introduce a new product. This marketing technique is relatively cheap to implement, as the only real cost is the prizes. In addition, if competition is in a highly targeted magazine, then the prizes will appeal to all readers, which should ensure a high number of entries. Also, the competition can persuade people who would not have normally considered the brand or product to consider it. This can create new customers, and encourage existing customers, or previous customer to buy again.

The word of mouth aspect of a magazine competition is a fantastic way to get a product known in a short space of time, and to encourage others to buy the magazine. Depending on the product and the magazine, the product may be reviewed, and there may be a competition to win that product in that edition of the magazine.

Magazines that cover different interests, or appeal to different sorts of people may have different competitions to win different sorts of prizes in them. A sports magazine may offer a trip to a sporting event, as well as sportswear or sports memorabilia as prizes. A music magazine may have concert tickets, or a musical instrument or accessory as a prize. Celebrity magazines may offer film tickets, or a VIP trip to an event as a prize. A food based magazine may offer prizes such as cook books from well known chefs, or a meal at an exclusive restaurant. Magazine competitions can even offer cash prizes. As money can be spent everywhere, and appeals to all magazine readers, a cash prize can be the most tempting competition. Holidays are also a good option as most people feel like they could do with a holiday, so why not have a free holiday courtesy of a magazine competition!

Whatever you are interested in, there’s bound to be a magazine competition for you, whether you are a business looking to promote a product, or a reader looking to win a prize. Why not see what you could win?

Article by Jessica Vandelay

For decades children’s magazines have provided fun reading material, activities and inspired a love of reading in children. Magazines like Highlights for Children, National Geographic Kids and Sports Illustrated Kids provide quality educational value on a variety of subjects to children of all ages.

Husband and wife team Garry Cleveland Myers Ph.D. and Caroline Myers launched Highlights for Children magazine in June of 1946 in Honesdale, PA. Both Cleveland and Myers worked for Children’s Activities magazine and were experts in the teaching of writing and reading. Instead of retiring at the end of their Children’s Activities tenure they decided to launch their own children’s magazine.

The purpose of Highlights magazine is to provide children with positive learning material; one of the magazine’s guiding practices is the motto “Fun with a Purpose,” which appeared on the cover of the first issue and continues to appear on every issue. The Highlights for Children creed also appears on the masthead of each issue, “This book of wholesome fun is dedicated to helping children grow in basic skills and knowledge, in creativeness, in ability to think and reason, in sensitivity to others, in high ideals, and worthy ways of living–for children are the world’s most important people.” Highlights for Children magazine currently has more than 2 million subscribers.

The National Geographic Society launched National Geographic Kids in 1975 as National Geographic World for kids ages 6 to 14. The kids’ magazine was instantly popular and has won many awards. The magazine publishes 10 issues a year. As of June 2006 the magazine reported a circulation of more than 1.3 million. In 2001 National Geographic changed the name to National Geographic Kids. Like the adult version, National Geographic Kids’ content focuses on animals, the environment and cultures of the world. Regular features of the magazine include columns like “Amazing Animals,” “Kids Did It” and “Cool Inventions.”

Recent National Geographic Kids features include “Recycle Roundup,” an interview with archaeologist and National Geographic Explorer Fredrik Hierbert and a story on the rescue of an endangered orphan baby gorilla. The magazine also runs contests for children like the International Photography Contest.

The National Geographic Society also launched National Geographic Little Kids recently. National Geographic Little Kids is an award-winning magazine for pre-school age kids from 3 to 6 years old. The magazine includes teaching tools to inspire a lifelong love of learning. Subjects include animals, nature, science, cultures and fun games like puzzles. National Geographic Little Kids also regularly includes crafts, recipes and tips for parents.

Another popular kids’ magazine is Sports Illustrated Kids. Sports Illustrated Kids is a spin-off of the sports magazine Sports Illustrated. Sports Illustrated Kids launched in 1989 and the target audience is 10 to 17 year-olds. One of the main goals of Sports Illustrated Kids is to promote good sportsmanship and a love of reading. It covers news on all the major league sports teams with action photos and easy-to-read stories. There are also stories on star athletes, helpful instructional tips from professional athletes and interactive contests and activities. It also includes games, comics and trivia. The Sports Illustrated Kids website includes scores, schedules and stats.
