The fluffy, white powder falling from the skies makes winter a great time for family activities. All it takes is a little bit of planning, a lot of bundling, and the willingness to explore the great outdoors during the colder months.

Plan Ahead

Winter activities are just as beneficial to your family’s health as summer activities. However, you do need to plan ahead. Of course, every family member should have a warm, waterproof winter jacket. What could the golden shores of Bondai Beach possibly have in common with the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon? The fact is that both are amazing destinations for the water sports enthusiast.

Ask some water sports enthusiasts where the best action is to be found and they may mention some faraway foreign beach. There are others though who know better; the Columbia River Gorge, an 80 mile waterway that cuts through Oregon and Washington in the Pacific Northwest, is one place that no aquatic adventurer should miss out on visiting. Nor should the motorist, the ride along the highway that follows the Columbia River Gorge is unforgettable, as thousands discover every year.

For many of the visitors to the Columbia River Gorge though, the real action is right down on the water, where daredevils can get their adrenaline fix from a trip thorough raging white waters, while the more sedate river lover can indulge themselves with a calming float in a simple row boat or sturdy canoe along one of the many quiet backwaters.

Canoeing and kayaking are very popular pursuits all along the Columbia River Gorge, with guided trips available that range from quietly bobbing along calm backwaters to the thrill of crashing down through some of the best whitewaters and rapids to be found in the country, meaning that there is something for everyone, whatever their courage level.

For those who prefer their water sports to really be on the wild side the kite boarding action along the Columbia River Gorge is said by many enthusiasts of the sport to be the best in the US. Kiteboarding – which is sort of like surfing on a skateboard – needs great winds, and the many who go there to indulge their passion for the sport say that the winds in the Columbia River Gorge are just right. Windsurfers must agree too, as each and every August the Columbia River Gorge is the site of the US Windsurfing National Championships.

No discussion of water sports can be complete though without considering fishing opportunities, and there are indeed plenty all along the Gorge and the ponds and lakes that flow off it. One of the biggest challenges for fishermen in these waters is landing an elusive sturgeon, as they lurk deep in dark waters, just as their ancestors have for centuries, and can be found as large as ten feet in length. However with walleye, wilderness trout and small mouth bass abundant too, there is a tremendous amount of variety.

If, on the other hand you prefer dry land, there is still plenty to do in the Columbia River Gorge. The sightseeing is incredible, for instance there are more than 75 waterfalls on the side of the Gorge that is located in Oregon alone. Add to that hundreds of great eateries and fascinating shops of all kinds and the possibilities for exploration abound.

For decades children’s magazines have provided fun reading material, activities and inspired a love of reading in children. Magazines like Highlights for Children, National Geographic Kids and Sports Illustrated Kids provide quality educational value on a variety of subjects to children of all ages.

Husband and wife team Garry Cleveland Myers Ph.D. and Caroline Myers launched Highlights for Children magazine in June of 1946 in Honesdale, PA. Both Cleveland and Myers worked for Children’s Activities magazine and were experts in the teaching of writing and reading. Instead of retiring at the end of their Children’s Activities tenure they decided to launch their own children’s magazine.

The purpose of Highlights magazine is to provide children with positive learning material; one of the magazine’s guiding practices is the motto “Fun with a Purpose,” which appeared on the cover of the first issue and continues to appear on every issue. The Highlights for Children creed also appears on the masthead of each issue, “This book of wholesome fun is dedicated to helping children grow in basic skills and knowledge, in creativeness, in ability to think and reason, in sensitivity to others, in high ideals, and worthy ways of living–for children are the world’s most important people.” Highlights for Children magazine currently has more than 2 million subscribers.

Highlights for Children magazine offers book club reading lists, articles on a variety of subjects like science and the arts and crafts ideas in every issue. Popular features are “Hidden Pictures,” “Goofus and Gallant” and “The Timbertoes.” It also features articles on educational toys, tips on hands-on building toys and science kits. In 2007 Highlights launched Highlights High Five for kids ages 2 to 6 years old.
